To put it simply, Erectile Dysfunction, commonly shortened to ED, is the inability to get or keep an erection that is adequate for sex. Although there are a variety of different causes for ED, it ultimately occurs due to too little blood flow into the penis and too much blood flow out.

What causes ED?
There are many different factors that can be causes of ED, and sometimes it can be caused by a combination of factors. In other cases, a specific cause is never determined. However, some common causes of ED include heart disease, obesity, cigarette smoking, diabetes, blood vessel disease, certain medications, anxiety, depression, and stress, amongst others.
Can ED be treated?
Yes, there are definitely options to treat ED. It’s a much more common condition than most people think! With that being said, it’s important to complete an online assessment and be evaluated and prescribed by a healthcare professional, as there could be underlying causes that may also require treatment.
When should I seek in-person treatment?
Although you will need to speak to one of our online healthcare professionals to get prescribed ED medication, we always recommend seeking in-person treatment for any worrying symptoms, as ED can sometimes be a beginning sign of more serious health problems, such as heart disease, which is where the heart’s blood supply is interrupted or blocked. Some symptoms to look out for include heart attack symptoms (chest pain, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to your shoulder or jaw), sudden vision loss or vision changes, sudden hearing loss, irregular heartbeat, swelling in your hands or feet, shortness of breath, seizures, feeling like you may pass out, or having an erection that is painful or lasts more than 4 hours.

PDE5 inhibitors are the class of drug which each of our ED treatments fall under. Here are some of the most common side effects.
Before taking any PDE5 inhibitor, you should be aware: People who are taking organic nitrates or nitrites should not take PDE5 inhibitors, due to the combination which can reduce blood pressure to dangerously low levels. If you have beenadvised by a healthcare professional to avoid sexual activity, should not take PDE5 inhibitors, as they can worsen cardiovascular conditions.

- Headache

Severe Side Effects
- Erections that last several hours. Tell your doctor right away if you have an erection that lasts more than 4 hours
- Decreased eyesight or loss of sight in one or both eyes.
- Sudden decrease or loss of hearing
- Heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeats, and death. Most of these happened in people who already had heart problems
- More shortness of breath than usual
- Low blood pressure. Symptoms of low blood pressure include feeling faint or dizzy

If any of these severe side effects occur, seek medical care immediately.

Is ED medication effective?
For most men, yes. Viagra’s FDA-approved prescribing information notes that 63% – 82% of patients reported an improvement in their erections after taking it. Other PDE5 inhibitors, such as Cialis, are effective as well because they work in a similar way in the body. The American Urological Association states that PDE5 inhibitors are considered “one of the mainstays of ED treatment”.
While these medications work for most people, it’s important to note that they won’t work for everyone. As with any medication, everyone’s individual reaction is unique and your healthcare professional may alter your dosage or medication altogether depending on your side effects and reaction.
What is the difference between Viagra, generic Viagra, and sildenafil?
The main difference between these three medications is the dosage and cost. They all have the same active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, and all work very similarly in the body.
Both branded Viagra and generic Viagra are offered in doses of 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. Generic Viagra is the cheaper option out of the two, but some patients may feel more comfortable using branded Viagra.
Sildenafil is actually the generic form of a medication called Revatio, and is FDA-approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (a type of high blood pressure in the lungs). However, it contains the same active ingredient as both Viagra and generic Viagra and comes in doses of 20mg, so doctors are able to prescribe in doses of 20mg, 40mg, 60mg, 80mg, or 100mg. Sildenafil is also the cheapest form of sildenafil citrate available, so it’s perfect for those who don’t want to break the bank in order to bring the passion back to their sex life.
What is the difference between sildenafil citrate and tadalafil?
Sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in Viagra, generic Viagra, and sildenafil, while tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis and generic Cialis. While these medications work in similar ways in the body, there is a distinct difference in how long they last.
Sildenafil citrate takes around 30 to 60 minutes to begin working, and lasts for about hour hours. This is a good option for those who are able to plan when they engage in sexual activity. On the other hand, Tadalafil takes around 30 to 120 minutes to begin working, and it lasts for up to 36 hours, so it’s great for those who want more flexibility and spontaneity in their sex life.
There are also other differences between the medications- for example, sildenafil citrate is less effective when taken with food and it can cause temporary blue vision in some patients. Tadalafil can be taken with food and is much less likely to cause temporary blue vision in patients, and it can also be taken daily at lower doses.
Can I take ED medication more than once per day?
ED medication should not be taken more than once in a 24-hour period. Taking it more than once per day can increase the chance of priapism (a permanent erection) or other serious side effects. If you have taken more than what’s prescribed by your doctor, or you took the correct dosage but are having worrying side effects, you should seek emergency medical attention right away.
Is ED medication affected by food?
Eating fatty foods can reduce both the rate and total absorption of medications containing sildenafil citrate. Because of this, it’s recommended to take Viagra and its generic forms on an empty stomach to achieve the best results. Food, however, does not have a similar effect on Cialis or its generic forms.
Can I use ED medication with alcohol?
It is not recommended to take ED medications and drink alcohol together. Not only can it decrease the effectiveness of the medication and make it harder to get an erection, it also increases the risk of side effects such as headache, dizziness, fainting, and even heart palpitations.
Will ED medication automatically give me an erection?
No, taking ED medication will not automatically give you an erection. The user still needs to be sexually aroused or stimulated to achieve an erection. To put it more simply, ED meds make the process easier when the time is right.

Do you offer alternative treatments for ED?
While it’s been proven that orally-taken ED medications are extremely effective for most patients, they don’t work for everyone. There are other treatment options that include lifestyle modifications (including exercise, limiting alcohol use, quitting smoking, and dietary changes), penile vacuum pumps, and surgery. Each treatment comes with both risks and benefits, and your doctor will want to ensure you fully understand that before moving forward with a new treatment plan.
At this time, the only prescription medications for ED that OneHealth prescribes are oral PDE5 inhibitors, including sildenafil citrate and tadalafil. If you are looking to pursue an alternative ED treatment, we recommend speaking with a doctor or nurse in person. However, we do offer sex coaching that can be beneficial in reaching a fulfilling sex life, especially when combined with a prescription medication that safely works for you.
What is the difference between Cialis and generic Cialis?
To put it into simple terms, the main difference between these two medications is the cost. Branded Cialis and generic Cialis both contain the same active ingredient, tadalafil, and they have similar side effects and work similarly in the body. Generic Cialis is cheaper than branded Cialis, but some patients may prefer using the branded version.
What is off-label usage of a medication?
Off-label use is when an approved medication is used for an unapproved use. While this means that a medication will be prescribed and used for reasons that have not been specifically approved by the FDA, you can rest assured that our healthcare professionals are very knowledgeable in this sector and will take into account any potential risks that a course of treatment may incur.
What information should I share with my doctor before being prescribed any ED medications?:
It’s extremely important during the consultation to let your doctor know about any health conditions (such as heart conditions, bleeding disorders, penile deformities, or liver, eye, or kidney conditions) as well as any current medications or supplements you are taking. This avoids the risk of severe side effects happening and can help your doctor decide which specific medication fits your needs and lifestyle best.
Will ED medication make me want to have sex?
The act of taking ED medication alone will not necessarily make the user want to have sex. These medications do not directly affect sex drive or libido; they are more so meant to be taken when the time feels right. However, being able to get and maintain a strong erection may increase confidence in some men, which can lead to feeling more excited and comfortable engaging in sex.
