About Hair Loss

COMMON QUESTIONS

What causes hair loss?
Male pattern baldness occurs when longer, darker hairs that once grew on the scalp are replaced by thinner, shorter, less pigmented hairs. This is due to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone.
Can hair loss be treated?

Early on, it’s possible to stop or even reverse this hair loss. However, at a certain point, the hair follicle also loses attachment to the small muscles in the skin (called the arrector pili muscles). When this happens, hair loss is permanent.

Our doctors and nurse practitioners may prescribe finasteride (generic Propecia) to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). This medication helps patients maintain the hair they have or possibly even regrow some hair they have lost.

You can also get minoxidil topical solution 5% (generic Rogaine), an over-the-counter topical treatment, to slow or even stop hair loss at the crown of the head.

Your doctor or nurse practitioner may recommend the use of finasteride combined with minoxidil topical solution 5%.

How long does it take for hair loss treatment to work?
Finasteride and minoxidil typically take three to four months of daily use to start seeing visible changes. It can take up to a year to see the maximum results. As long as you don’t experience side effects, it’s best to continue the medication for one full year before deciding on whether the medication is doing all it can for you. Like all medications, finasteride and minoxidil will work differently for different people. To sustain benefits, you have to continue using hair loss medication. If you stop, your hair loss may return.

Side effects

We believe in transparency. These are the recorded side effects that patients may experience as a result of using hair loss medication.

In clinical trials, less than 2% of men experienced sexual dysfunction due to finasteride. In addition, finasteride can lower serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancers. Finasteride is not approved for use in women, and pregnant women should not handle finasteride.

If any of these severe side effects occur, seek medical care immediately.

These are not all the possible side effects of
finasteride.

The most common side effects associated with minoxidil topical solution 5% are local skin irritation. Systemic side effects are rare as less than 2% of it gets absorbed. Minoxidil topical solution 5% is not intended for use in women.

How does hair loss treatment work with One Health?
One Health is a telemedicine company that provides a discreet, convenient, and affordable way for you to receive hair loss treatment from a doctor or nurse practitioner—all without leaving the couch. Minoxidil (generic Rogaine) is available for purchase directly from the website as an over-the-counter (OTC) product. If you are interested in prescription treatment, it starts with an online visit. The online visit will ask you about your symptoms, your medical history, and other basic information. You’ll also be asked to upload a photo of your ID to verify your identity. Once you have done all of this, a doctor or nurse practitioner will review everything, determine if you’re a candidate for hair loss treatment through telemedicine, and craft a personalized treatment plan for you.
Which medications are available through One Health for hair loss?

There is one prescription-strength medication for hair loss available on the Roman platform: finasteride (generic Propecia). This medication helps patients maintain the hair they have or possibly even regrow some hair they have lost. Finasteride can be used for a receding hairline as well as hair loss at the crown.

In addition to finasteride, minoxidil (generic Rogaine) is an over-the-counter treatment for hair loss that you can purchase directly from the website without going through an online visit. Minoxidil can be used for hair loss at the crown. The specific form of minoxidil offered by Roman is minoxidil topical solution at the 5% strength.

In some cases, your doctor or nurse practitioner may recommend using finasteride and minoxidil together.

How does minoxidil work?
Scientists aren’t entirely sure how minoxidil works, but it is thought that it helps increase blood flow to the hair follicle. This helps more nutrients to get to the follicle, which can support hair growth. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp daily.
What is male pattern baldness?

Male pattern baldness (also called androgenetic alopecia) is a common form of hair loss. It is typically associated with a receding hairline and hair loss at the crown (top) of the head. Not all men experience male pattern baldness but some men are genetically susceptible.

Male pattern baldness occurs when hair follicles undergo a process called follicular miniaturization. This is when the longer, darker hairs that once grew on the scalp get replaced by thinner, shorter, less pigmented hairs. This process occurs as a result of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is derived from testosterone. Early on, it’s possible to stop or even reverse this hair loss. However, at a certain point, the hair follicle also loses attachment to the small muscles in the skin (called the arrector pili muscles). When this happens, hair loss is permanent.

How does finasteride work?
Male pattern baldness is due to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is formed when testosterone is exposed to an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride works by blocking the ability of 5-alpha reductase to convert testosterone to DHT.
What is the difference between Proscar (finasteride 5 mg) and Propecia (finasteride 1 mg)?
Proscar and Propecia are two brand-name medications that have the same active ingredient: finasteride. However, the medications come in different doses and are used for different things. Proscar comes in 5 mg tablets and is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Propecia comes in 1 mg tablets and is used to treat male pattern baldness. Currently, Roman only offers finasteride in the 1 mg dose (a.k.a. generic Propecia), which is intended for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
