13 Signs of a Panic Attack

According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), there are thirteen possible signs of a panic attack. These symptoms can begin when you’re in a calm state or when you’re in an anxious state.

At least four of these must be present in order for you to qualify as having experienced a panic attack. 

Here is the list:

  1. Sweating
  2. Palpitations, accelerated heart rate, or pounding heart
  3. Trembling or shaking
  4. Sensations of shortness of breath or feeling smothered
  5. Feelings of choking
  6. Chest discomfort or chest pain
  7. Nausea or abdominal distress
  8. Feeling dizzy, light-headed, unsteady, or faint
  9. Sensations of heat or chills
  10. Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations)
  11. Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (feeling detached from oneself)
  12. Fear of losing control or “going crazy”
  13. Fear of dying
